“At the
Anderson House we offer personalized care. We take care of our
residents as we would take care of our own family,” said
Administrator Pam (Anderson) Matiko, R.N. “It’s the Golden
Rule, and a philosophy that was passed down to us by our
grandmother. We try to instill this in our employees as well.”
The
Anderson’s, Pam, Andy Anderson, Lisa (Anderson) Lewis, and Rob
Matiko, Pam’s husband, believe that the measure of successful
living is time well spent with friends and family. This is an
attitude that was instilled in them by their grandparents, Paul
and Bernice Anderson, who established the facility in 1964, and
their parents, Larry and Lova Anderson who preceded them.
As the third
generation of Anderson’s operating this community, the family
is highly involved in the day-to-day operations of the
campus--and the lives of their residents. They promote open,
one-on-one dialogue between residents and staff, and strive to
create a sense of belonging for both. It gives the family great
pleasure each year to host residents and their families at both
a winter party and a summer barbecue.
The Anderson
community provides service to 200 seniors. They are private pay
and proudly employ 175 local staff members. The Anderson
community offers residents four levels of care in one location,
meeting both temporary and long term needs for seniors. ‘The
Plaza’ at Anderson House offers retirement and assisted
living. ‘The
House’ provides skilled nursing, rehabilitation and long term
care. The ‘Adult
Family Homes’ are yet another alternative for senior care and
services offered in a smaller home-like setting.
The House
The
Anderson House Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center is
dedicated to providing quality compassionate care for both acute
and chronic illness. They take a team approach to care and
encourage staff to work together to problem-solve and tactfully
motivate and encourage residents. Anderson House offers a
nursing care “Total Care” program, which includes:
*Rehabilitation Therapy - Inpatient Physical &
Occupational programs.
*Speech Therapy - Therapists assist with a wide range of
speech, swallowing and
communicative
disorders. Adaptive techniques are even helpful in memory loss
or
other disorders.
*Recreational Therapy - Activities include exercise
sessions, crafts, baking, movies
and many opportunities
to participate in group and seasonal activities.
*Social Services - Support to facilitate adjustment to
new environments and
frustrations related
to limitations.
*Dietary Services - Delicious and nutritious meals, daily
menu changes with a
seasonal emphasis.
*Respite Care - Excellent short term care.
*Hospice Care - Specialized care for those with an
advanced illness and limited life
expectancy.
The Plaza at
Anderson House
The Plaza
offers full service retirement and assisted living in private
studio and one bedroom apartments. The monthly rent includes
three daily meals, once weekly housekeeping services, all
utilities, and a fun-filled schedule of activities and outings
in the Anderson bus. There is a beauty/barber shop on site, and
a wellness program, as well as many other services. All of this
with a setting that includes some garden apartments, and the
convenience of a location with sidewalks, and proximity to the
supermarket, post office, pharmacy and public transportation.
The Plaza is proud of its RN supervised assisted living program
available to residents, with services such as medication
supervision and grooming assist, amongst other things, that
promote and enhance their independence.
Adult Family
Homes at Anderson House
The adult
family homes on the Anderson Campus were designed to meet the
needs of residents requiring care in between the skilled nursing
and assisted living categories. They offer home style care in a
smaller, more communal and intimate setting. Each home houses up
to 6 residents and is staffed by a resident manager. Programs
are individualized for each resident and provide many of the
same amenities available on the rest of the campus such as a
library, beauty shop, planned activities and special events.
Currently the
Anderson House is partnering with the University of Washington
as a test site for a pilot dementia-care training program. They
also partner with Shoreline Community College, allowing nursing
students to work a rotation at Anderson as a part of their
curriculum.
In 2004, the
Anderson family received the Dorrit Pealy Award, a Shoreline
Center for Human Services Community Service award, for their
many contributions to the community. They were also honored for
their support of The Shoreline Arts Council, Cancer Lifeline,
Northwest Hospital, Center for Human Services, The
Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center, YMCA, Rotary,
Shoreline Parade, and the North City Business Association.
The Anderson
House is a member of WAHSA, a state association serving
predominantly not-for-profit providers, dedicated to providing
quality housing, health, community and related services to older
persons. WAHSA is affiliated with the American Association of
Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). When asked what it
means to be a WAHSA member, Andy Anderson, Anderson Plaza CEO,
stated, “WAHSA is a group that we are well aligned with in
terms of professionalism and ethics, with respect to resident
care and business practices.”
